Seasonal Rant - Holiday Tipping

I just finished reading an article on MSN about whom I should tip extra for the holidays and how much. Here are a few suggestions: Cleaning Person - $50 suggested (that's me or Mr. Wonderful, so n/a) Child's Teacher - $20 suggested (tip the teacher??? I bought my grade school daughter's teachers each a small gift. However, I was under the impression that they get paychecks.) I will also buy a gift card or give some baked goods to my daughter's gymnastics teacher. Hairdresser - $20 suggested (I pay a pretty penny to be this blonde and I tip 20% throughout the year. I think that's good) Newspaper Carrier - $20 suggested ( I only receive a Sunday paper and I pay for that online. I have never met my newspaper carrier and he/she doesn't have to go from door to door to collect. Tip? Not going to happen) Mail Carrier - $20 suggested (Being that I call mine 'The Mail Bitch' because one of my friends left a couple of magazines in my mailbox once and The Mail Bitch threw them out in the street...doubtful) Manicurist - $20 suggested ( I tip generously throughout the year and yes, I'll probably tip Han extra for the holidays. She goes out of her way to work me in sometimes and gives me little extras) First of all (and you can ask my parents about this - it started at a very young age) I DO NOT LIKE TO BE TOLD WHAT TO DO!!!! I am a good tipper, but I don't tip people who get my take out food ready to go unless there is some extra work involved and then they get a couple of bucks. I tip bartenders and waitpeople very well, I tip my manicurist, hair dresser and eyebrow guy (yup, I'm kinda high maintenance)I tip food delivery people. It's not my job to suppliment everyone else's income! Look at all the money I have saved by being a Scrooge about this! Do you tip extra during the holidays? If so, who? Maybe I'll give everyone a big tub of Cool Whip.

We tip our paper people--we get 2 papers 7 days a week. I feel the same as you about hairdresser--I generously tip throughout the year; i will bring her vanilla from MX--that's what I did last year & she loved it! I have no chldren, so I don't have to worry about that. Won't tip the mail carrier--I don't think they're supposed to accept monetary gifts anyway!

Oh...and add to the list of people I do tip when services are rendered - my facialist and massage therapist. However, I don't see them on a real frequent basis (I'd like to, tho). I'm not going to take them extra holiday money, either.

I tip the paper carrier, too, because the paper is always on the porch right by the door every morning - and that's a big deal to me. I also tip my hairdresser well all year, so I don't tip extra at Christmas. I've been going to her for 11 years and she's become a friend, so I give her a small gift. We have a different mail carrier every week, it seems, so no tip there. Good question!

Moonie, I've always thought those holiday tipping articles were ridiculous! I don't think federal employees, like the mailman, are supposed to accept tips. Geez, I think they get paid pretty well and have great benefits! And as far as hairdressers, teachers, etc..., I give them a small gift as a token of appreciation. I tip hairdressers for services, but I never tipped one of Michael's teachers! Those articles are written every year and sound like they're aimed at people from another planet. (Like the Hamptoms or NYC? HA!)
